This section covers 8 glossary entries. Casino pages use every term here all the time, yet almost none of them explain it. Every entry supplies the definition, the common misreading attached to it, and a worked example with the sums shown, since these terms are usually misunderstood in a particular, predictable way rather than simply being new to people.

Bankroll management in full

Setting a limit on what can be lost before starting, and stopping there.

Fixed by: The player. Nothing else sets it. Where it shows up: Responsible gambling pages and deposit limit settings.

The misreading: Chasing losses often gets described as recovering.

Bet unit, in detail

Short for also called stake size. A single spin or hand’s stake, sized as a fraction of a bankroll, not selected as a figure on its own.

Fixed by: The player, ideally basing it on the bankroll and on how volatile the chosen game is. Where you meet it: Stake selectors located on a game’s betting panel.

The misreading: A bet unit that looks small is frequently presumed safe from the start.

Maximum bet rule in full

Shorthand for what some call a max stake rule. An upper bound on the stake per single spin or hand while wagering a bonus, and crossing it commonly voids the bonus and its winnings.

Who fixes it: The operator, through its bonus terms. Where you meet it: Defined by the bonus terms and conditions, and sometimes automatically enforced in the game client.

The misreading: Most would guess that a maximum bet rule only matters to those deliberately staking big, and it is easy to see why.

Free spins explained

A round of spins in the feature, given without an added stake.

Fixed by: The game studio if it is a feature of the game, the operator if it is a promotion. Where you meet it: In the feature lists for games, and apart from that in bonus terms.

The misreading: An in-game free-spin round is one thing and free spins awarded as a promotion by an operator are another, although both go by the same name.

Progressive jackpot explained

Something that grows from a share of every qualifying stake and pays out once someone wins it is a prize pool.

Fixed by: Studio or jackpot network, whichever one pools the contributions. Where you meet it: Pages for network jackpots, alongside jackpot tickers over the reels.

The misreading: A large jackpot can be misread as a sign of improved odds.

Wild symbol in full

A symbol whose role is to substitute for others and complete a winning combination.

Set by: The game studio, in the paytable. Spot it on: the paytable and the feature list of a game.

The misreading: Most people presume that wilds stand in for every symbol on the reels.

The RTP entry

Short for return to player. What comes back to players from a game as a share of every wager, over the long run, stated as a percentage.

Fixed by: Fixed in the build by the studio that develops the game. Spot it on: spec tables for games, plus the info panels studios publish.

The misreading: To read a 96% RTP as getting 96% of your money back on an evening is the common mistake.

Hit frequency, in detail

Short for also called hit rate. How often a spin returns a win of any size, ignoring the total returned over time.

Fixed by: The game’s own studio, within the paytable and reel maths. Where you meet it: Info panels and spec sheets provided by the studio, less commonly published than RTP itself.

The misreading: Assuming a game pays more or is ‘looser’ because its hit frequency is high is a common habit.

The thing most often got wrong here

Across all of these terms, the most frequent mistake is believing the casino decides them. For the majority it can’t: RTP, volatility, paylines, wilds and scatters are set by the studio during the build, and whichever site hosts the game has no way to change them.

The wagering requirement is the odd one out, since an operator writes it into its own bonus terms. Every entry says which of the two applies, since that split determines where a complaint belongs — send it to the wrong party and it goes nowhere.
