The 2022 stop, step by step

The end of online e-sabong came in two distinct stages, and mixing them up is the most common mistake in conversation. Here is the order in which they happened.

1. 3 May 2022. President Duterte announced the halt in a taped broadcast. It was a spoken order, and operators stopped streaming fights nationwide.
2. 28 December 2022. President Marcos signed Executive Order No. 9, which formally prohibited online e-sabong and turned the spoken halt into written law.
3. After 2022. Licensed cockpits kept running physical fights under PD 449 and their local rules, with no online betting layer.

Use this sequence whenever you read a headline about sabong. If a story says an order “banned” sabong, check whether it means the spoken order of May or the signed document of December.

Sabong history: from early chronicles to PD 449

Sabong history in the islands is far older than any of the laws above, and the timeline is short enough to hold in your head.

1. 1521. Antonio Pigafetta, who sailed with Magellan, described cockfights among the islanders, which places the sport well before Spanish rule.
2. 1974. The Cockfighting Law of 1974, PD 449, set the national framework for cockpits; the licences themselves are issued by local governments.
3. 3 May 2022. The spoken order stopped online e-sabong.
4. 28 December 2022. Executive Order No. 9 prohibited it in writing.

The word itself is Filipino, and most of the vocabulary below mixes Tagalog with Spanish loanwords, which is why terms like llamado and dehado sound familiar to Spanish speakers.

How a cockpit fight runs from pairing to verdict

A fight follows the same order in every licensed sabungan. Here is the sequence a spectator sees.

1. Pairing. Two roosters are matched by weight and condition, which is the sultada.
2. Blades. A tari is fitted to each bird’s leg.
3. Betting. Bettors call and signal their sides to the kristo while the birds are held in the ring.
4. The fight. The handlers release the roosters.
5. The verdict. The sentensyador declares one rooster the winner or calls the fight a draw.
