The tongits card game at a glance

Every choice in the game comes back to one question: can you turn the cards in your hand into melds faster than the other two players can? A hand ends the moment someone succeeds, so speed matters as much as the cards you were dealt. That is why the sections below follow the order of a real hand, from the first card to the last count.

How the deal works

1. The dealer shuffles and deals 13 cards to themselves and 12 to each of the other two players, which uses 37 cards.
2. The 15 cards that remain go face down in the middle as the stock.
3. The dealer opens play by discarding one card without drawing, and the discard pile starts beside the stock.
4. Play then moves around the table, one turn at a time.

Because the dealer starts with the extra card, the dealer skips the first draw. That single card is the whole reason the hands are 13 and 12. Deal rotation between hands follows the table’s own rules, which the game’s help screen lists.

Card values and melds

Every card carries a point value, and those values are what you count when a fight or an empty stock decides the hand.

A meld is a group of cards you lay face up. A set is three or four cards of the same rank, such as 7 of spades, 7 of hearts and 7 of diamonds. A run is three or more consecutive cards of one suit, such as 4, 5 and 6 of clubs, with the ace counted low.

Your turn: draw, meld, sapaw, discard

1. Draw the top card of the stock, or take the top discard if you can use it at once in a meld you show the table.
2. Lay down any sets or runs you hold.
3. Sapaw: add a card to a meld already on the table, yours or an opponent’s, to shed it from your hand.
4. Discard one card to end your turn.

Sapaw is the move that makes tongits feel different from plain rummy. A card you cannot meld on your own can still leave your hand by extending someone else’s set or run.

Three habits that save hands

1. Count your unmelded cards every turn, so a fight call never surprises you.
2. Discard jacks, queens and kings early, because each one adds 10 points to a count.
3. Watch which discards your opponents take, since each pickup shows a meld in the making.

How a tongits hand ends

When you call a fight, each opponent decides to accept or fold. A fold hands the hand to the caller, while an accepted fight goes to a count of what is left in each hand. The tie rule and the scoring per hand sit in the game’s help screen, so open it before your first table.
